Free and Open Source Software is a genre of software written by people who are keen to share their work with others almost without restriction, other than to be acknowledged as the original author.

Free software, as advocated by the Free Software Foundation, places one further significant restriction in that all derivative work must also be licensed as free software. This is commonly known as the "copyleft" restriction (as opposed to copyright), also known as a viral license.
