Creating the Ubuntu Trusty (14.04) lab image as a VirtualBox instance on a separate Linux host. In this case, we are also connecting to the Virtual myserver as the lab router.

VirtualBox stuff

Goal: install a basic 64-bit "Desktop" Ubuntu install into a VirtualBox guest.

  • make sure the "ubuntu-14.04-desktop-amd64.iso" image is available (download from mirror.aarnet.edu.au)
  • make sure BIOS has "Virtualization" support turned on
  • create new guest instance: "trusty-lab-master"
  • make sure select "Ubuntu (64-bit)" as Virtualbox guest type
  • select 20GB VDI for storage type

Installing Trusty

  • for ???, accept all defaults, click "Continue"
  • for "Where are you", either click on "Sydney" on world map, or type "Sydney" in dialogue bar, click "Continue"
  • for "Keyboard layout", use default "English (US)" for both panes, click "Continue"
  • for "Who are you?", use "CECS IT", "trusty-lab-master", "cecsit", password, "Require my password to log in", click "Continue"
  • wait...
  • when "Installation Complete" appears, click "Restart Now"
  • press "ENTER" when advised, then power off guest when GRUB menu appears

Take snapshot

  • click on "Snapshots" in VirtualBox main window
  • name it something like "Post_Install_Snapshot"

Boot into new image

  • Power up trusty-lab-master in VirtualBox
  • press Enter to select standard "ubuntu" kernel
